NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT

What is a Neuropsychological Assessment:

There are many names used interchangeably for a Neuropsychological Assessment; with the most common being Neuropsychometric Assessment and Neurocognitive Assessment.

A Neuropsychological Assessment is a comprehensive assessment that involves the systematic collection and analysis of developmental, behavioural, socioemotional, cognitive (IQ) and/or educational information for the purpose of making inferences about underlying brain function.

These inferences are achieved by investigating an individual’s strengths and weaknesses across the aforementioned areas and identifying any patterns that may exist.

The collected information is then compiled into a Comprehensive Psychological Report (CPR) contains the information garnered from the CPA and is primarily compiled to convey the information to other medical, health, and educational professionals (often the referrer) for the purpose of specialist diagnosis, and/or the implementation of intervention/treatment.

Ultimately, the neuropsychological investigation’s aim is to rule out the presence of any clinically significant afflictions, or if indeed present, to facilitate diagnosis of the core underlying problem, identify its aetiology and impact on the individual, and identify any comorbid concerns that may exist.

The large majority of subsequent diagnoses are genetic, hereditary and familial in nature, with a significant minority environmental/experiential in origin.

Neuropsychological Assessments are used within many of the varied areas of Psychology by Registered Psychologists / Clinical Psychologists / Clinical Neuropsychologists / Educational Psychologists to investigate many possible conditions/disorders such as ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dyspraxia, Language Disorder, and Specific Learning Disorders.

Other Uses of Neuropsychological or IQ Assessments:

In addition to the disorders listed above, Neuropsychological Assessments / IQ Assessments are also used to conduct many of the assessments required for Government Organisations, such as Disability Support Pension (DSP) assessments, School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) assessments, Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) assessments, National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) assessments, Centrelink / Department of Human Services (DHS) assessments, and Department of Education (DoE) assessments.
